Jolicloud

Announcing the Pre-Beta Release

November 24th, 2009 at 6:03 pm, by Tariq Krim

Jolicloud is about to enter into Pre-Beta and we are dropping the invitations. We consider the product and its installation stable and simple enough for a broader release.

At Jolicloud, we believe people should be able to switch operating system on their netbooks. Like the adoption of Firefox made the web 2.0 possible, enabling users to switch OS will accelerate the growth and benefits of open cloud computing.

The most compatible netbook OS

Jolicloud is now compatible with almost every netbook. With our recent announcement on the GMA500 support, we think we did quite a good job in enabling 98% of netbooks with out-of-the-box compatibility (only some netbooks running VIA C7M or using the old AMD GEODE are still a bit slow or do not have optimal graphic support. We don’t loose hope of seeing these models gaining faster and better support in the future).

We are very excited by this coming release and I’d like to walk you through some of the new features that will be part of it. Don’t forget that later in the year our Beta will also have more announcements of its own including our new launcher.

So what is in this Pre-Beta release?

Jolicloud Express: our new Windows installer

With Jolicloud Express, our dream of turning any Windows netbook into an open Jolicloud machine becomes a reality.

Our Windows installer makes the process as easy as installing a new browser: All you have to do is to download the Jolicloud Express program on your Windows netbook, launch it and follow a couple of simple instructions. That’s it!

Pre-Beta Express StartA gorgeous Jolicloud installer for Windows XP and Windows 7

As most netbooks use Windows, we thought that was the best way to go. Of course we will keep the old way of installation so if your netbook is using Linux or if you have multiple OS on it, you can still install using the ISO or an IMG and a USB key.

Note that Jolicloud Express installs Jolicloud alongside Windows, keeping your Windows data absolutely safe. At any time if you want to remove Jolicloud, you can do it by accessing the add/remove program in Windows. The installer will soon be available in the download section of our website. Our team is finalizing and polishing a very slick final version with our new interface design.

Pre-Beta Express PreparationJolicloud Express has the easiest installation ever!

A New UI

Our focus has always been to remove the complexity of traditional operating systems to let you enjoy a fast and fun experience. In the coming months you will also discover our new UI and design. We already redesigned a lot of icons and we will push an updated theme that brings more consistency to a lot of the UI elements. Our new improved theme is currently being tested and will be rolled out as an update.

Pre-Beta Login ScreenOur new login screen

An up-to-date kernel version that introduces our optimized Atom framework

When you are using Jolicloud, you may not know that you are using the most advanced Linux kernel (2.6.32) and the most optimized framework for Intel Atom processors. This framework will enable strong improvements in boot speed and video management. 175 patches and updates have been included so when you download this new version you don’t have go through the upgrade process.

Our team is committed to bringing the latest improvements to your netbook. To share more with you on this, we just started a new blog: building.jolicloud.com. If you are into technology you can pay a visit and learn more about our technological improvements and challenges.

Thanks for being part of our Alpha program!

I would like to share a bit about our Alpha program: We are thrilled to announce that over 60,000 invitation codes have been sent!

You guys are awesome! Thanks to the thousands of feedback messages and user reports, we have built what we consider to be the most stable, out-of-the-box and advanced Linux-based platform for netbooks.

We want to retain this special relationship with you. This is why all the Joliclouders who have registered with and used Jolicloud during the Alpha program will gain a special status in their profile: ‘founding members’. This status will let you enjoy advance testing and exclusive features! Jolicloud was made for you and you made Jolicloud.

Netbook Twitter control, our new HTML5 launcher and more to come soon

We are now working on the Beta and a lot of fun announcements will be made during LeWeb conference in Paris on December 9th. We will also be at CES in Las Vegas in January, where we hope to release the Beta. It will introduce our new HTML5 user interface, which will replace Ubuntu Netbook Remix and we hope will blow your mind.

We will also introduce a cool feature that enables account to control each of your Jolicloud machines via Twitter. Yes you heard us, you are going to be able to follow and control your machine’s via twitter.

Pre-Beta Splash ScreenOur new boot screen

The Pre-Beta is currently being pre-tested by some of our users on netbooks that we don’t have. We will let you know as soon as it is ready! If you have the alpha version, the only thing you will need to do is to upgrade your system.

The convergence of the cloud, mobile connectivity and affordable netbooks is powering a computer revolution that everyone can be part of. Together let’s build jolicloud and make it one of the driving forces in this revolution.

Hey guys keep up the great work! BTW I love the HP mini for the icon on the new user interface! LOL. I’ve been running regular UNR 9.10 lately but I’m excited to come back to jolicloud and check out all the changes!

kaotoxin | November 24, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Hi there!

First of, JoliCloud works like a charm on my Pentium IV HP Tablet PC and that’s great!

But, the UI…

Well, I’m a sight impaired person and I MUST use my computer reading white text on black background, this meaning I (and we are about 10 millions worldwide having the use it that way!) need to fine tune the UI’s color scheme and font sizes.

With tweaking the GTK in the user preferences and removing the “mobilizer” addon of Firefox, I’ve been able to come with a good compromise but the “JoliCloud” UI (I mean the place where the apps directory is I.E.) won’t obey any of the UI “rules” I’ve chosen nor will the “apps” do :(

I mean: if I open Gmail (I.E.) in FireFox, it works fine as I (battled hard to) fined tuned it, but if I use the “JoliCloud” app, it will remain black text on white background :( [deception inside}.

All of this meaning that besides the Ubuntu-based UI elements, nothing in JoliCloud is accessible and I fear the *brand new HTML5 UI* will sadly improve the problem.

You can join me by mail for more details (or by phone if you’d like to as I’m French, I’d mail you my phone number).

Hi Tariq and all the team.

Keep up the good work and please bring me and my 9.999.999 fellows a fully accessible modern OS !

Yours

Jacopogio | November 24, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Well done from a ‘founding member’ ;-) !

“Better a Jolicloud OS today than a GChrome one day !”

Samuel | November 24, 2009 at 6:33 pm

Just want to tell that JoliCloud works awesome on my Acer, keep up the work!

Steve (proud founder member) | November 24, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Looks lovely in the few screen shots you’ve shared. I can’t wait to try it out on my Dell Mini 10. I really look forward to improved performance on the GMA 500 platform!!!

Thanks for doing a great job, Jolicloud.

Benjamin | November 24, 2009 at 9:10 pm

This looks really great, especially the upcoming new interface. Been using it on my old dell for a while now. Even though my laptop isn’t officially supported, it works perfectly on my slow processer, so well done :)

James | November 25, 2009 at 12:31 am

Keep up the good work! Jolicloud runs beautifully on my Asus eeepc 701 4G. Wireless, webcam and sound. I was using Adam M’s kernel back with Ubuntu EEE. Can’t wait for the pre-release Beta.
Cheers form Guelph Ontario Canada.

Morgil | November 25, 2009 at 12:44 am

Thank you, you guys finally convinced me to buy a netbook. I’m really looking forward to using Jolicloud!

Justen | November 25, 2009 at 12:48 am

Can’t wait for this release. Will be running it in a VM on my tablet PC (Kubuntu 9.10/HP TX2) as well as native on my wife’s AA0 751. Just found out about Jolicloud today while looking at ChromeOS, love them both, can’t wait to see who comes out on top. I have to say, Joli is looking good right now.

Jolibuzz | November 25, 2009 at 2:41 am

From Washington, D.C., wishing you the best for the beta! And please do take kaotoxin’s comments on usability seriously. Especially please consider higher contrast fonts in your UI.

Zak | November 25, 2009 at 4:08 am

I’m currently posting this comment from a Windows 7 Virtual Machine running in Jolicloud. Sure, I may be in the minority, ahving installed Jolicloud on my Sager NP8660, but I’ve been using it for about a month, and so far it’s lasted longer than any Linux distro ever has on my laptop. I can’t wait for the release of the new UI and icon theme. Cheers to Jolicloud.

Emmanuel | November 25, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I have an archos 9 (gma 500 with touchscreen). I’m interested in testing the new beta version on it.

Cappy | November 25, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Well thanks for Jolicloud and all your hard work. I have been using it now for about 1 month on my Acer Aspire One Model D250 and it runs like a charm. I total ditch the “Other” operating system that came with it. I just LOVE IT!! Let’s keep rock’in with JOLICLOUD. GO TEAM!!

Samuel | November 25, 2009 at 8:02 pm

So when will I get the beta? There is no updates at all right now??

Jonny Petts | November 25, 2009 at 10:16 pm

I was very pleased with the alpha although i could not install it on a partition, i could only run from a usb each individual time :/ but i did love the downloading of apps and showing it of to my friends :D and they where all like :O :O how did you get that!

Drew Bugno | November 26, 2009 at 4:13 am

The screenshots are great. I can’t wait to try this on my HP Mini 1000. Are there any plans for Jolicloud Express on OS X?

Mark Amber | November 27, 2009 at 5:46 pm

I know this is on all of our minds, but WHEN!!!!!
Is there a trac page where I can watch each bug as they are annihilated. I am getting like 2 updates every 30 min, this is just about the most active project I have ever seen.

Sorry, I am a bit impatient, but I am sure that we are all wondering the same thing.

ssombra | November 27, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Hi,
I can’t wait to test it in my Dell Mini 10.
thanks for the great work!

Syd Lawrence | November 29, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Hi guys, firstly jolicloud is awesome, I have been using it now for over a month on my acer aspire one. It is the first OS I have found perfect for my aao, as it has a small 8GB SSD.

I am a (self confessed) Apple fanboi, so I installed OSX on my AAO, but it took up too much space, so I gave windows 7 a go, but it made me remember why I stopped using Windows in the first place (too damn clunky). I then installed the standard UNR which was good but not perfect. (Admittedly currently the differences are only that with jolicloud you have pre made prism packages.) But still, I love jolicloud. And I cant wait for your beta.

I am now even tempted to get a touchscreen eee top to load jolicloud on and have it in the home of everyone to use! Has it been tested at all on the eee top? If not, I would be more than happy to test it for you!

Thanks again!

Syd Lawrence | November 29, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Of course I meant, ‘the home for everyone to use’ no ‘of’ ;)

mark mirsky | November 29, 2009 at 6:47 pm

I just bought a Lenovo u150 with the core 2 duo processor. How is Jollicloud going to work with this and is it best to install it through Windows 7, or from a USB stick? Are there any advantages to installing it rather than the latest Ubuntu on the Lenovo? Will my e-sata express card work with it. I am a Mac user and curious about whether Jollicloud will read Mac journalled drives.
Sorry for the amateur’s questions.

Mark

ssombra | November 29, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Hi, is the pre beta release going to be open for everybody to test? I’ve been waiting for jolicloud to support GMA500 so i can test in in my dell mini 10.

felizardo mecua | November 30, 2009 at 10:16 am

it great OS love much greater than ubunto netbook remix

word | December 1, 2009 at 2:56 am

well done!
as a vanilla linux person i appreciate your efforts to make our computing experience as smooth as possible. i find jolicloud a reliable and user friendly alternative - and i’m still on alpha!
keep up the good work.

MJae | December 1, 2009 at 8:45 am

I admit I had to remove Jolicloud from my EeePC701 as I was experiencing wifi and audio problems. And the patches didn’t solve my probs but it had been awesome.

I just hope that the beta build will have solved all my problems. Keep it up guys!

I love Jcloud!

Ameer Robinson | December 2, 2009 at 3:12 am

I just got my invite to be a beata tester for Jolicloud but how do I gain access to the jolicloud express installer??? Please help thanks!!!

Cédric Duclos | December 2, 2009 at 10:01 am

@Ameer: I think you mix up alpha invitation and Pre-Beta program.

You seem having received an alpha invitation to download Jolicloud alpha 2c. Jolicloud Express is not yet available.

Can I ask which netbook(s) you own?

Effi Fuks | December 2, 2009 at 3:18 pm

I have a Sony Vaio P (1.66 atoz with gma 500). I’m interested in testing the new beta version on it. can you send me an invite please?

Dmitriy | December 2, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Guys,I’m already an Alpha tester. Please advise how i can try Beta.

Acer Aspire One 110.

Arjan | December 3, 2009 at 10:34 am

Wow…. It works great on my Asus eeepc… looking good, flexible and fast!!

Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to new versions

yvan | December 3, 2009 at 11:03 pm

where is your source code ?
Is it a free and open distribution, based on linux ?
I am looking for a driver for the insane GMA 500 ?
have you made improvement ?
Your distribution is not a big virus ? isn’t it ?
Do you want dollar ? ;-)

Oscar Calderon | December 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Hey, congratulations for this projects, it looks awsome as it grows!! For users that have installed the alpha version could just update from iso/img pre-beta image instead of reinstalling the pre-beta version?

Zak | December 4, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Yes, alpha users will be able to upgrade to the pre-beta.

beez1717 | December 5, 2009 at 4:14 am

I’m just curious if this update is gong to be a new download or if it will be through the My Jolicloud Updaer.I do have to say that Jolicloud works quite well even on my macbook :) I just wish one thing: that you let these users know that we can run it too and that we don’t need a flash drive to do it. Just a burned CD

Christina | December 6, 2009 at 12:46 am

Thanks Jolicloud! I am really looking forward to what this new pre-beta has to offer. Been running it on my Dell Mini 9 since the fall and I must say, I am in love. Continue the great work!

Steven mcDougall | December 6, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Good luck at LeWeb conference in Paris on December 9th.also cant wait for CES in Las Vegas in January with the Beta release.
Got a new net book for Christmas (eeepc 1005HA), just in time for testing and my Mum has just got a toshiba nb10 also, not the nicest netbook but one i have not seen jolicloud running on yet.HTML 5 rocks, i really look forward to seeing what you guys implement

Ameer Robinson | December 6, 2009 at 7:02 pm

@Cédric Duclos I have Dell Mini 110 right now I have the W7 RC on there right now but’s it’s just to bloated and this would be perfect

Leslie Curtis | December 11, 2009 at 3:04 am

I downloaded the beta but it still requires an invite code for full functionality. Is there anyway I can get a invite code so that I can run with all access?

Bryan | December 11, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Will the Pre-Beta update from the Alpha automatically or will I need to re download and install it fresh? I just finally got around to installing the Alpha on my Mini 10v last night, I would hate to have to do it again.

MrCarney | December 12, 2009 at 3:52 am

Bryan,

From above (took me a while to find):

“If you have the alpha version, the only thing you will need to do is to upgrade your system.”

henrylow | December 17, 2009 at 6:18 am

Small Business owners are largely forgotten. Thats why I only focus on them. I have experience several members of my family file bankruptcy due to small business failures. I also I suffered through 2 destroyed businesses due to failure however, in my failings I have learned some of the secrets to success. (Who can say they know it all?)

Very interested by this talk of ditching UNR in favour of a HTML5 interface. Can’t wait to try it out…

Traqqer | January 4, 2010 at 1:27 am

It won’t matter. Once Chrome OS starts to get traction in late 2010, all other netbook OS’ will fall by the wayside. As with Android and the Nexus One, Google is taking a more concerted effort to make sure the hardware(s) takes advantage of the software’s capabilities. As indicated in the following article, Google appears to be doing just this.

http://www.allchromenews.com/2009/12/17/get-ready-for-the-google-branded-chrome-os-netbook/

amir | January 12, 2010 at 5:31 am

Wow! I’m quite amazed! I’m enjoying it via BootCamp on my Mac OS X. Nice and fast!

James | January 18, 2010 at 6:03 am

I’m using the pre-beta on my AAO 751h which uses the gma500 but hardware acceleration doesn’t appear to be working. Is gma500 not fully supported yet?

cturnbull802 | February 16, 2010 at 6:44 pm

what i dont get is on my eee 901 i have wifi if i run it as a bootable flash drive, but once i install it no wifi.

mikeay | March 13, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Interesting, i’ll post more when i know more lol

cheers
