Jolicloud web app platform now HTML5 ready

March 23rd, 2010 at 7:57 pm, by Jolicloud Team

As promised earlier this month, we released today our new Chrome-based web app platform. This platform will seamlessly replace Prism as a rendering engine for all web apps. As a Jolicloud user, the only thing you need to do is to update your system.

You can now enjoy the 600+ web apps available in our App Center with a faster, low memory footprint, and HTML5 ready browsing experience. With this new platform, Facebook Connect, Google account and Twitter connect authentification is shared across all the apps. If you also use Chrome or Firefox you can import your profiles.

Nickel, our Chromium for web apps

Nickel, our customized Chromium for web apps

Since Chromium (the open source version of Chrome used for our app backend) is not designed to provide the same visual experience as Prism, we had to build our own customized version. We named it Nickel, the “Chromium for fullscreen web apps” and made it open source. You can download the source code.

Thank you for your feedback! Don’t hesitate to browse through our App Center and have fun with our selection of apps using the new platform. Please let us know of any cool apps that you think should be there too.

Stay tuned for more updates on new features this week!

Happy joliclouding!

i tried updating my jolicloud on my hp mini 110 and its not saying there are any updates.

Tim | March 23, 2010 at 8:06 pm

Hopefully I can update, my little update jolicloud tool in the taskbar freezes up on any attempt to clear all, or update,(as of late last night) and apt-get shows no upgrade or dist-upgrade packages available, yet the software update thinks there is something to do, and goes crazy on the CPU, is there anyway to reset the Jolicloud software update tool, so I can have it search for new updates again rather than try and re-run paused jobs? (reboot has no effect, as well as apt-get clean, autoclean, autoremove, etc…)

Romain Huet | March 23, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Rich, thanks for your message, we’re aware of this display issue.

You just need to click on Update All to get all the new Jolicloud Chromium-based apps.

Adam | March 23, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Since this last update I cannot connect connect to MyJoliCloud (have a blank screen only). The web-apps all fail, too

Mark | March 23, 2010 at 9:38 pm

I’m showing 2 jolicloud updates available and after 5 attempts they appear to start updating but never finish.

Jan | March 23, 2010 at 9:59 pm

No updates … unfortunately …

Peter | March 23, 2010 at 10:02 pm

To get the updates click on accesories go to trminal and enter “sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade” without the quote marks good luck

Bigibang | March 23, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Nice, i love it, but now that you have an open code, what about adding tabs (very useful for facebook for example)

Zak | March 23, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Anyone who is having no notification for updates, this is a known issue. Update anyway with the Update All button and you’ll get the Chromium apps.

Anyone who is having any other issues, please come visit me in GetSatisfaction.

Anyone who is having trouble launching apps after the update, please try rebooting your netbook first.

Tom | March 23, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Nvidia ION Please!

Zak | March 24, 2010 at 3:10 am

@ Tom

It’s coming.

gastonmdq | March 24, 2010 at 4:53 am

Excellent update!! all run faster!!! i love it!!!

cheers!

tim | March 24, 2010 at 5:43 am

dang it, the damn software update thing just freezes and does not respond if I click it at all, tried doing manual apt-get update/dist-upgrade 0 pkg updated, tried dpkg -a –configure doesn’t do anything, any way to reset the software update thing?

AlanH | March 24, 2010 at 2:16 pm

What exactly has changed? There does not appear to be additional privacy features as promised.

Thanks.

Zak | March 24, 2010 at 4:23 pm

@AlanH

What kinds of privacy features? Chromium comes with a whole slew of them.

rich | March 24, 2010 at 6:15 pm

It worked! The web applications are so much faster now! Your version of the Chromium browser is also faster than the one in the app repository. I cannot wait until the next version is released this month.

Long Live Jolicloud! I got rid of my WIn7 partition a few weeks ago.

Nate | March 24, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Is the final release still on track for release this month?

Matthieu | March 24, 2010 at 7:55 pm

The new App center wasn’t suppose to come with that update ?

lila | March 25, 2010 at 12:49 am

Do you have a bug reporting protocol? I updated and now the display rotation isn’t working. My computer is an Asus eeepc 701.

Thanks for all your work, I love Jolicloud!

lila | March 25, 2010 at 12:55 am

Strike that, I re-bootted and now screen rotation works.

etisarchos | March 25, 2010 at 1:33 am

Works perfectly on Archos10 netbook.
Apps run faster, I needed to reinstall Twitter and Meebo, but it’s better now, congratulations and many thanks !!!

:-)

Mike | March 25, 2010 at 4:42 am

@adam
Im having the same problem with my Acer Aspire one! the Webapps (facebook) and MYJolicloud all come up as a blank white screen and go nowhere. they used to work… I read somewhere that it could be due to unavailible free disk space.

I can’t test this because when I try to delete anything in my trash it says it can’t delete anything permanently..

What should I do? Ive run out of space!

Cedric | March 25, 2010 at 7:13 pm

@Tom @Zak

Actually, Nvidia ION support is available.
Click Update All and restart ;)

Mark | March 25, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Wow, check out the resident chromium browser not the one in the apps after the update. Mine is super fast and slick on an eee pc 900a with 2 gigs of memory. Great job guys.

Tobotron | March 26, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Great even faster than before! But I’ve noticed my gmail account says its down when I’m using Chromium and the Gmail web app however it works fine when I go to load it in Firefox…

Is this a system wide issue or just me? (assessing from UK - might but shouldn’t have anything to do with it)

Tobotron | March 26, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Gears is also broken since the upgrade…is this something that can be addressed esp as netbook users do sometimes need to work away from an internet connection?!
Currently work around is just to fall back to firefox, not ideal…

Tobotron | March 26, 2010 at 12:26 pm

lastly just noticed that ever time I close and then re-open chromium its forgetting my password to sync my bookmarks, it works but I have to re-enter it every time :S

Tim | March 26, 2010 at 9:30 pm

I don’t think the new Chromium(nickel) is supposed to be used for full time web browsing, I thought it was just supposed to replace Prism. You should probably just the proper Chrome release in the case of problems

Pablo | March 29, 2010 at 12:04 am

I have the same problem as Tobotron, but connecting from Argentina. The gmail app show a blank page with the legend:

Esta página web no está disponible.

The webpage at https://mail.google.com/mail/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Más información sobre este error

I tried to desinstall and reinstall the app, but doesn’t fix the bug. With firefox works fine

Zak | April 1, 2010 at 12:39 pm

@ Tobotron and Pablo

This was an upstream issue with Chromium which has since been fixed. Something to do with Google and SSL. Anyway, update and it’ll be gone.

Gears being broken is also Google’s fault, and it’s really because they’re moving away from it to start using HTML5 for offline storage. At least that’s what I’d estimate. The team will try and fix Gears for now, though.

Chromium forgetting the sync password should also by fixed with the upstream updates.

@ Tim

You can most certainly use Nickel for browsing. In fact, most users prefer Nickel to Chrome now for several reasons.

Ari | April 12, 2010 at 8:39 pm

I like it, but it seems that Flash runs really slow in Chromium. To point of unusable with many Flash games… Is this a limit of chromium or is something you guys can fix?

Cédric Duclos | April 13, 2010 at 10:15 am

Flash support has to be improved for Chrome/Chromium and we still working on it!

TheArchitect | May 19, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Hi, can I install it on my PC? I mean, I’m working with internet, so I want to install netbook Os on my PC.

    Cédric Duclos | May 20, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Jolicloud is designed for netbooks but it’s worth to try, especially with Jolicloud Express if you have Windows on your computer.
