Jolicloud new network manager with 100+ 3G keys supported and VPN

March 25th, 2010 at 6:19 pm, by Jolicloud Team

Jolicloud was designed for 3G from the ground up, but it has been a real challenge to get all the 3G keys to work out-of-the-box. Until now, the latest generation of keys that also include internal memory could not be detected as modems in Jolicloud. After a lot of hard work our team solved the problem for a large number of them. All the keys we collected internally have now successfully passed the test.

When you plug your 3G key, wait until it’s detected as a modem: it will appear on the list of available networks. A wizard will then guide you to configure the connection.

Dozens of new models will now work, on top of the ones that are already supported. Check out the full list of supported models, and please do send us feedback so we can fully evaluate the progress we’ve made.

As some of you asked for it, we are happy to provide VPN access to connect to enterprise networks. Supported networks include the most popular VPN clients: Cisco OpenConnect, Cisco Concentrator VPN, Microsoft VPN, and OpenVPN.

We are not yet fully satisfied with the current gnomenetwork manager, but we will keep on improving it to offer the best experience; In the mean time, your feedback is very welcome!

To get this latest update, simply click on “Update All” and restart your computer.

I’ve been using my Win 7 partition to use mobile internet so far over bluetooth with my Nokia 5230 but found by selecting plugins and switching to PPPSupport and disabling when the notification appears you can use internet over bluetooth on pretty much any new phone…Jolicloud worked out the rest of the connection via the wizard.

Maybe a post about this could help people get more from their netbooks…found it used about 10mb an hour looking at webpages and chat only :)

mobile internet done
annoying Lexmark printer done

:)

Hi, Great to have VPN accessible without complex package installation. However, the OpenVPN config page is not usage on 7″ screen, as the buttons ate the bottom of the page are not visible.

I’m hopping to continue to rely on Jolicloud to connect to the world.

vpnc does not appear to be functioning. I get an error about not being able to open the authentication dialog. I assume this is because network-manager-vpnc-gnome is missing. It’s not even in the repository.

I think you might be confusing VPN with Remote Desktop (RDP). Windows XP does not have any type of VPN server capability, only Windows 2000/2003 Server does. If this is the case you might want to start a new question regarding setting up Remote Desktop over the Internet.

Hello,

I just wanted to say that I have been reading for a while and I would like to sign up for the feed. I’ll give it a try but I will need some help. This is a terrific find and I would hate to lose touch, and maybe never discover it again.

Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to reading/posting again in the future!
