Access to your Windows files from Jolicloud Express with our new shortcut

by Jolicloud Team

March 31st, 2010

When you install Jolicloud with our Windows installer Jolicloud Express, it installs alongside Windows, leaving all your Windows data untouched.

As requested by a lot of users, we provide you now a direct shortcut to your Windows files!

Jolicloud Launcher Shortcut

You can browse all your Windows data, open and modify all your files:

  • If you installed Jolicloud alongside Windows XP, you find your personal data in ‘Documents and Settings’.
  • If you installed Jolicloud alongside Windows 7, you find your personal data in ‘Users’.

Jolicloud Nautilus Shortcut

The great thing is that you can create your own shortcuts for your Windows folders:

Jolicloud Nautilus Shortcut Creation

To get this new feature you need to be on a Jolicloud Express install, click on “Update All” and restart your session.

Happy joliclouding!

I am glad to see that this project isn’t exactly dead at the moment… in fact, it seems very alive :D

I haven’t used jolicloud in a while though, because I had it installed on an Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop, & CPU scaling wasn’t supported (but it is on Ubuntu), & it kept overheating and shutting down…. I loved the operating system though! and especially the ability to use .deb applications on here with ease!

@Bunghole

Unfortunately, laptop hardware isn’t supported by Jolicloud. You can, however, take it for a test run with the Express installer to see if it works for you now.

    I guess that only some laptops are not supported. I have an hp dv4 with jolicloud installed and running VERY well.
    My only issue is connecting to my printer via print server over a wifi network. Everything else works just fine.

Isn’t that the same as open the windows directory by going to the Hard-drive at Places?

PS: Sry for my bad english. ;)

Finally, since Jolicloud express only goes up to 40gbs now i can access my media with out having to carry around my hard drive. Loving this OS more and more everyday

@ Chris

That only applies if you have a native install. With an express install, there is no icon for a separate partition under Places because there is no separate partition.

This is excellent, opening up new uses to me, which might have been available before, but this change makes me aware of them :)

Nice work – had a play with it last night. Works like a treat.

Expectations beaten again!

Did you restart your session?
Have you more than one partition?

Well, my data are on a separate d: partition which was therefore already accessible, but you never know what you might be needing to access on your windows c:

However what would help me a lot would be the ability to change the video, music, pictures, documents shortcuts to have them point to my separate partition rather than the default folders. Cédric, any simple way to do this ? Merci

@Widescreen
It’s very easy ;)
Open the file browser (Nautilus), delete the ‘useless’ shorcuts and create your own shortcuts as explained in the blog-post.
You can sort them as well!

@Diego
This update is for Jolicloud Express users but you can create your own shortcuts, too.

@pieRr0Ur
- Install: Of course! Use Jolicloud Express http://www.jolicloud.com/download#jolicloud-express
- Boot loader: It will let you select Jolicloud *or* Windows.
- Wifi: It should work out-of-the-box. If it doesn’t, contact us! By the way, what’s your netbook?

    I have an MSI WIND U100 PLUS here are my netbook’s specs http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodtmpspec&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1784

    Have been using jolicloud for a while now, it runs great, but sadly, reboot, and resume from standby. And the screen display plays like 4,5,4,5,4,5,4,5,4,5 :(

    But one of your employers already told me that reboot/resume are known issues he’s Zak Kaufman, I believe he’s an employee ??

      Zak is helping us for the first level of support.
      It’s true that ‘Suspend and Hibernate’ is a big topic, we’re still working on it.

Thanks Cédric that was all in the post indeed… should have read it more carefully, I thought it was just about the Windows thing.
I’m still trying out Jolicloud. So far I must say I’m impressed with the hardware support, everything worked right out of the box on my Samsung NC10.
Software wise, there’s more than I need in the app directory. I still haven’t figured out if I can add my own apps via the terminal and add them to my favorite apps. Actually I’m missing xbmc. I installed boxee which is close, but I lack the control I have on my media library with xbmc. Otherwise I would launch the video files directly from Nautilus, but jc misses a good video player like MPC. Where’s the right place to post suggestions btw ?
Keep up the good work.

You’re welcome ;)

You can suggest an app here: http://www.jolicloud.com/support/feedback

By the way, be aware we’re focusing on the webapps for the time being.

I just installed Jolicloud on my ASUS EEE PC 1005-HA, and strangely, the Windows shortcut seems to lead to some folder with the subfolders of “jolicloud,” “recycler,” and “System Storage Information” or something like that. I should probably know what this stuff means, but this is my first time trying out Linux. Does anybody know what could be causing this?

    Do you have more than one partition on your disk, for instance C:\ and D:\ in Windows?
    If yes, I assume you installed Jolicloud Express on the D:\ drive which is your host drive.
    Nevertheless, the C:\ drive should be automatically mounted.

Delete the bookmarks from the editor section, but still appears. Now there is nowhere but I’m seeing it in the menu.

As I can restore the menu or manually delete favorite section?

Es imposible quitar la seccion favoritos. Intentalo. Aunque la desactives desde el “menu editor” sigue apareciendo

It is impossible to remove the Favorites section. Try. Although off from the “menu editor” still appears

So how do I mount the D:\ drive as well – If I have installed Jolicloud on my D: drive??

C:\ is already mounted and is well….

Thanks for your replies in advance!

    If you have installed Jolicloud on your D: drive, the Windows shortcut is still linked to the \host directory and you should see your files stored on the D: drive.

I’ve asked this question in other Linux forums and never an answer so let’s see. As far as viruses go we know Linux is way less vulnerable but, if you can access your windows partition from Joli are you open to some serious exploitation (either dual booting, layering, or whatever)? Could someone exploit the Linux partition and access the windows Partition and wreak havoc?
Thanks
