Welcome to the new Jolicloud Updates web app

April 28th, 2010 at 8:45 pm, by Jolicloud Team

Jolicloud is designed to provide the best experience for your netbook. Every time we can we improve drivers, applications, performances and we want to make sure that it’s done the easiest way. We are happy to announce that we have improved the update experience by introducing a new Jolicloud Updates web app. As you will see, it benefits from the new Jolicloud design that will be deployed later on all Jolicloud applications.

The update process is super easy, you just need to check the notification area with the Jolicloud Updates icon: Jolicloud Updates Icon

The process is pretty straight forward.

New updatesWhen it’s orange, you have new updates

No updatesWhen it’s grey, you have no new updates

When you click on the icon, you access to the Jolicloud Updates web app.

To update the updater (sorry we couldn’t resist), you just need to click on ‘Update All’ with the previous process and restart your session.

Thank you for staying up-to-date and happy Joliclouding!

We wait for Jolicloud final version.

Tanmay | April 28, 2010 at 11:22 pm

In future can we have custom selection of updates to be installed?

Why the clock-set applet doesn’t work with battery?
In AC Adapter, them works fine. But if I use battery, doesn’t change the clock.
What happened?

    Cedric | April 29, 2010 at 10:28 am

Are you able to manually change the CPU usage profile or frequency?

    Fabio | May 6, 2010 at 2:50 pm

I still have problem with the clock, every time i turn on the pc i have to modify the time that is different of 3 hours.. sometimes also the clock doesn’t update connecting to internet…

      Cedric | May 7, 2010 at 11:10 am

It’s a known issue for some users.
Personnaly, I don’t have it but we’ll investigate and fix it!

xevi | April 29, 2010 at 4:13 am

The processor clock!

Cuando estará disponible la Ruby Final Version? Ubuntu ya está en la 10.04 pero prefiero esperar a Jolicloud ;)

New Spotify update crashes in my Jolicloud!!!

    Cedric | May 5, 2010 at 4:40 pm

    We’ll fix it!

For the time being, you can open a terminal (Accessories > Terminal) and type: gksudo spotify

It’s nice to simplify the updating process, but it’s even nicer to tell users what is to be updated. The new process is less transparent than Ubuntu and even Windows. Does this approach not go against the whole spirit of being in control of your own computer that Linux is supposed to represent?

Also, if the only real option is to “Update Now” (there is no “Casncel” or even “Later” option!), then why not just make the update totally automatic? You might as well just tell the user “your system has been updated” as a “fait accompli”. The user has no more real control or information with the current method.

    Cedric | May 5, 2010 at 4:42 pm

We’re planning to add these features:
    - a short description for each update
    - auto-checking for new updates and auto-update

dellaguida | May 2, 2010 at 9:33 pm

The update process does not work anymore, even after a fresh install… The previous versions did work. What happened ?

    Cedric | May 5, 2010 at 4:43 pm

    Did you install third-party softwares?

If yes, can you open a terminal (Accessories > Terminal) and type the following command?
    grep -l robby /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* | xargs grep -l -v jolicloud | xargs sudo sed -i -e ’s/robby/jaunty/g’

      mela | May 26, 2010 at 5:09 pm

i try that and it says
      -e expression #1, char 1: unknown command: ‘?’

I have been trying to update my system several times but as soon as the process starts it freezes and it does not update ever

      what can I do??

also i’ve been trying to add “add/remove” so i can install some more apps can you give me a hand with that as well?

Hiiqs | May 3, 2010 at 12:55 am

Not an improvement in my view.
Just adds to desktop clutter.
Much preferred the old system.

Same problem like dellaguida, udpate doesn’t work anymore !

What can we do ?

I tried to re-install “jolicloud-apt-third-party-repositories_0.6.4_all.deb”… no change.

MrCarney | May 4, 2010 at 3:14 am

I really liked seeing what was being updated.
If something broke, I had a pretty good idea what it was.

Can we get this functionality back please?

aaron | May 4, 2010 at 3:40 pm

The new updater is terrible - it doesn’t mention what the updates are, it doesn’t offer any choices, and it seems to use a lot more resources than necessary (it sets off the fan on my Toshiba NB205 without fail). If there’s any reason not to just use

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

then let me know.

    Zak Kaufman | May 5, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Update viewing is a planned feature.

If you’re going to upgrade via the terminal, it’s better to use dist-upgrade, though.

Stephany | May 5, 2010 at 11:32 pm

I have to agree with Hiiqs; the icon just adds more clutter to the right half of the panel. I already have a number of little icons there already; no need for an extra one that’s not doing anything functionally.

Allowing us to see what updates are being installed should not be a function that’s “under consideration”, but rather “in development” (or there already).

Cedric | May 7, 2010 at 12:42 pm

By the way, you can see the details of the updates now ;)

The updater isn’t working at all anymore. I’ve been trying to reinstall the updater and the whole prism thing as it freezes everytime… I can access “my jolicloud” only if I’m lucky, but I still can’t do anything as there’s a list of things I’ve tryed to install but the installer never gets through with that list, leaving it trying everytime.. Help, anyone?!

    Cedric | May 10, 2010 at 10:13 am

Did you install a third-party software?

By the way, you should be able to click on ‘Having problems?’ and get some instructions when you launch the updater.

Cedric | May 27, 2010 at 4:33 pm

@mela

If you have manually installed any third-party software, this might have compromised your configuration. Please download and install this package (http://download.jolicloud.com/jolicloud-notifier_0.3.10_i386.deb), then this one (http://download.jolicloud.com/jolicloud-daemon_0.3.10_i386.deb) to fix your updater.

Gerard | May 28, 2010 at 3:23 am

How does the Updater check? I mean how frequent? What specific time?

    Cédric Duclos | May 28, 2010 at 2:18 pm

By default, every day but we’re planning to auto-check when you’re connected.

iceman600 | July 18, 2010 at 9:37 am

i just did an update but my interface is still the same… my dashboard doesnt change and it says im updated…
