Upgrade from Jolicloud 1.0 to 1.1 Now Available

by Jolicloud Team

December 13th, 2010

Dear Jolicloud 1.0 users, today we are releasing the upgrade to Jolicloud 1.1. We have taken the time to optimize this process to make sure it happens seamlessly for all of you. This upgrade will enable you to get all the benefits of Jolicloud 1.1 in just one click without having to reinstall your system. Of course, if you don’t have any local data or configuration to back up, you can also install Jolicloud 1.1 on the computer rather than doing an upgrade, it will be faster.

First of all, please make sure your Jolicloud 1.0 setup is up-to-date. When your computer is ready, the dialog below will automatically appear on your desktop. Before starting the upgrade, check that your computer is connected to the Internet and that you have at least 1GB of free space on your drive. You also need to plug the power adapter so you don’t run out of battery in the middle of the process.

Jolicloud 1.1 Upgrade

When ready, just click on the ‘Upgrade’ button to start the process which should take approximately 1h30. You will see the following screen during the download and installation of the updates. You don’t have to do anything during the update process, so you can go out see a movie and come back to enjoy your Jolicloud 1.1.

Jolicloud 1.1 Upgrade In Progress

When the process is complete, the computer will restart and the boot screen will indicate that you are now running Jolicloud 1.1.

Please note that the Asus Eee PC T91 touchscreen and the Intel GMA 500 video card are not fully supported with Jolicloud 1.1 yet, but we are actively working on an update coming very soon.

For any additional information, please visit the Jolicloud 1.1 upgrade guide on the Jolicloud Help Center.

Enjoy and Happy Joliclouding!

Yes, please, out of box support for the GMA 500. If they do …. the only Linux distribution that will install on netboks to be Jolicloud.

I was also waiting for jolicloud 1.1
but i am very much disappointed with the release.
Sad Point of the new release is the it just doesn’t want to run with the internet which is a bad thing.Even the Installation is not possible offline. But the good point I must give to joli is the addition of wallpapers.I had problems with the update manager also.Kindly fix these problems ppl at Jolicloud.I love jolicloud 1.1.Just try to remove this feature of u have to say online thing even for installation.Otherwise Jolicloud is a awesome OS I’m lovin it.

You need an Internet connection only when you boot Jolicloud for the first time. Then, you can use Jolicloud even if you’re not connected to the Internet.
That said, the updates have been improved a lot with the 1.1.

@ebl: GMA 500 devices already work (you can install and use almost everything) but we need to finalize its support, essentially for local video playback.

@anonymus: yes, 1h30 :) It’s not a simple update, the whole system and all natives apps are upgraded.

1 hour and half???
I started the install 4 hours ago and is now on 50% of process.
Probably will take all night long to end the process.

And i have a T1 connection and 1GB of RAM…

At least inform about real timing. I would install it on another moment, now i cannot revert the change.

Although i have an old aspire one with ssd (came with linpus linux), i have a 16 MB DSL connection. I don’t understand how it takes too long.

I can’t recommend an upgrade for all the users of jolicloud.

Mines been going >6hrs now over 2Mbit DSL, still says ~1 hr to go :-( (Aspire One A110L 8MB SSD) Upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 only took about 2 hrs on the same machine. I think we can safely say this upgrade process is not viable if you want this distro to be taken seriously, needs a major rethink for next time as this would be a deal-breaker for any serious deployment of Jolicloud. This would be a shame as J 1.0 has proved to be a boon on the AA1 giving it a new lease of life.

You’re stuck on the system login screen?
Remember it’s not your Jolicloud web account, it’s the username/password you chose when you install Jolicloud OS.

Make sure you’re not in Caps Lock, etc…

I had the same problem but fortunately I wrote down the login when I installed Jolicloud the first time (I guess). I assume the problem stems from the fact that with Jolicloud 1.0 you didn’t have to login, hence the forgotten credentials.

If you don’t want to put your credentials at each login with Jolicloud 1.1 you can configure according to these instructions http://help.jolicloud.com/entries/366069

I got the upgrade notice today but when it finished (jolicloud doesin’t reboot) I turned my computer off and on and now it won’t boot i just get this message.
udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
udevadm settle is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
says this second line about 5 more times then.
error: unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon. ect ect
is there anything i can do about this without reinstaling the whole thing? Because i’m in Australia with wireless and it takes overnight to download and install.
I still love Jolicloud and won’t give up on it i can’t go back to windows now!

I love Jolicloud on my netbook! That is, until 1.1 wouldn’t connect to my wifi. My netbook as just kept getting better and better with Jolicloud. Now, if I cannot connect to my wifi, how do I really do any surfing?

I’m on the Samsung N130 with recently upgraded Jolicloud 1.1. I waited all night for the download and installation. When I logged in, I loved it. I still had some extra updates on Open Office to download, I downloaded them and rebooted. When I rebooted- wifi no longer worked. I’d love some help.

Have we really not got a solution for this wi-fi problem yet?

I’ve been forced to go back to Windows, which I’m sure you’re aware is not pleasant on a netbook.

Is there any way I can downgrade to Jolicloud 1.0 again without messing things up?

I’m muddling through with Win7 for now, but I’ll be looking for another netbook OS if nothing’s sorted soon.

Found the upgrade process to be incorrect. It would be nice for you to really know what happens. Like after you start the process it returns you to the Upgrade to Jolicloud 1.1. If you hit select upgrade it will try upgrading again then bring you back to this same screen. You need to select cancel the second time then go to upgrades and you will find you have 1850 or so upgrades to do this is another long time. Ended up deleting Jolicloud 1.0 from Windows and installing 1.1 directly. Happy I had backed up my docs but obviously does not help with e-mail settings.

Issue with my Eee PC 900 – Jolicloud works well on it EXCEPT the “icon dance” when you click an icon. That dance animation is too performance intensive for the machine so it slowly chugs through the animation, resulting in a 3-4 second delay before attempting to run an app. So often it takes longer to play that dance animation than to run an app! … Even on my desktop machine, the app doesn’t start to run until AFTER the dance animation creating an unnecessary delay (chug!) before an app starts. Please drop that animation! =) Aside from that, Jolicloud = total awesomeness.

1.1 upgrade broke my wifi. My wifi card (Intel 2200BG) is natively supported in the kernel, and is visible in the lspci.log:

06:0b.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection [8086:4220] (rev 05)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device [8086:2753]
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 22
Memory at b0108000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

But Network-Manager does not seem to find it. Do I really need to go back to 1.0, or worse – Ubuntu (where it works without any problems)? Any help is apprecieated.

Trying to connect to hidden networks, also can’t establish any conection. Then, after all that unvaluable of my time waiting, it detects networks and then you can connect… How do we fix this? Thanks for the good work guys!

My upgrade went through mostly fine on my Acer Aspire 1 (150 / ZG5) (1.0 originally installed from Win 7). Took about 2 hrs, so not too bad, although an offline installer / “upgrader” would’ve been nicer.

I’ve also noticed the longer bootup time compared with v1.0 — the login prompt takes lnger to appear, and then doesn’t immediately respond to my input either. I’ve seen the suggestion to re-install; any ideas on how to troubleshoot instead? Might help prevent the problem in future (perhaps even for inclusion in v1.1.1?)

Thanks again for a well-executed, fresh take on the computing paradigm.

p.s. I rebooted the netbook into Windows today to check something, and the interface looked completely foreign on the small-screen! Joli definitely suits it much better :)

Same problem here after upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1 on an HP Mini 1000. Is this something I can fix by tweaking /etc/fstab? I notice that file isn’t missing, so I didn’t know if Jolicloud used some other scheme to find the mount points during boot.

I am using a D250 Aspire, after the upgrade to 1.1, when it starts up the screen is pretty much just garbage. Noticed a quick flash message about hitting ESC on startup so I restarted and hit ESC, and got options for startup. This computer has an ATOM processor but that option doesn’t work, the next version 8.1 kernel works, now how do I get it to be the default startup, so I don’t have to use ESC and choose it every time.

I figure the online upgrader is broken. I had a snailpace three hour installation process, then couldn’t get further than a shell terminal afterwards, even after I’d put in my JC password. Fortunately, I’d just lifted off my data from the system and dumped it into my Windows, so I uninstalled the Jolicloud system entirely, collected the JC 1.1 full installer, and replaced the system with that. It works perfectly, as far as I can see. Superb upgrade, and thanks for the excellent wallpaper option. Just need to find out how to add my own wallpapers to the system. JC rocks!

Just finished upgrading an Acer Aspire One (150 ZG5) to 1.1..

1h30 is a bit of a joke.. the actual time taken was approx 9hours! It downloaded to 100% in around 25 mins, its the actual file copying that took so long!

It does seem to work better and there are some nice tweaks although boot speed it slightly slower.

Suspend/Resume does not work properly.. The graphics usually come back up garbled (it looks a bit like out of range used to on an old CRT!) or quite often it just crashes to a black screen and has to be hard reset to get back into jolicloud.

(is there any way to just make it fully shutdown when I close the lid instead of trying and failing to suspend?)

Other than that so far I’m impressed. Need to ability to add Local apps to the normal launcher somehow though as that would make this so much better.

P.S. If you have a touch screen (I’ve fitted one myself) then you need to buy World of Goo.. its Perfect for Jolicloud and Touch enabled Netbooks..

Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d use the service(8) utility eg: start S50network-manager
Unknown job: S50network-manager start

and at the end the prompt freezes at:

Enabling laptop mode…

Nothing happens after that. I think the network-manager could not connect to the WiFi network. I used the “iwconfig” command to see the available networks. I could see the Wireless networks detected.

Forgot to mention that I use Dell Mini 9.
It looks like some workaround to get 1.1 faster, as 1.1 use more processes than 1.0 which could make system slower. If you could tune it well, go for 1.1
1.1 supports Chrome with web store option, not supported by 1.0 chrome

I would like to suggest one additional feature request. In an ideal world, I would like to have the option for Jolicloud to automatically login and start a web browser in full screen mode. Some people store a great deal of sensitive information on the computer. I rarely if ever store any files on my computer. I may occasionally store a few important files on my email account. However, I never let the number of files exceed more than 20. Usually, the number is much closer to zero.

I had every intention of upgrading my eeepc 701 to Jolicloud 1.1 but it needed 1gb of free space which I didn’t have. I downloaded the iso for a fresh install, but thought I might as well try a few other distros at the same time. The problem was that the only USB boot disc creator you have included is your own, it wouldn’t work for any of the other isos I wanted to try (Slitaz, CrunchBang, Ubuntu). I tried using unetbootin, but Jolicloud appeared to be missing some dependencies. Even after installing those it still wouldn’t work. So, I basically had no straightforward way of creating bootable isos for any distro but your own without access to another PC not running Jolicloud. This didn’t really strike me as being particularly open.

In the end I (luckily) found a USB stick I had previously set-up for Peppermint Ice and booted that before running unetbootin from there to create bootable drives for the distros I wanted to try. Jolicloud wasn’t one of them because of the sheer effort it took, and my eeepc 701 is now flying along on CrunchBang.

Well, I’m very happy with the way this runs on my Asus eee 701. It is the perfect OS for that computer.

However, I’m very disappointed with the lack of support. I requested help 13 days ago, and no response! All I need is to have my old account deleted it (created another one by accident) and to have my new account reflect my correct email address (I put the wrong one in, and it had a typo). Why can’t we as users go in an edit our accounts? At the very least it would be great if someone would just address my support request ticket within a few days (13 days seems a bit much).

Hi everyone, couple remarks from me on upgrading from 1.0 to 1.1 on AcerOne ZG5. First of all the timing – 1,5H was fiction in my case, an upgrade took all night, over 9 hours to complete. Unfortunately entire operation has failed. After rebooting the display was all blurred, you could not see anything, only some moving shapes. I’ve however managed to type-in user and the password and system started. After apps synchronization and update which has appeared another reboot and again blurry screen (with successful login). After that all looked ok until I tried to click the icons on the dashboard – none of them was operating (chromium, facebook, twitter etc). Clicking did not result in any action, also after another reboots. Moreover the battery indicator was not operating, both when AC charging and battery work. Finally I’ve decided to reinstall entire system – downloaded ISO, USB Key creator, followed the instructions and now all is working perfectly.

My recommendation is to save your data and install the system from scratch, it seems the most reliable and quick way of getting your 1.1 version. Overall JC1.1 is sexy, intuitive and easy to use and I recommend it for everyone using the netbooks.

I am not happy. I was, now I’m not.

Jolicloud was my god’s grace for my netbook. A very simple operating system, family and friends could take my netbook and easily understand it. Touch screens worked fine. My Samsung N130 t’was brillig with this! I loved my nice little friend I could carry around- until tonight, of course.

My mouse froze- or maybe my system froze, I couldn’t tell. I could do nothing but shut it down. So I did. When I turned it back on, I hit my first problem:

My WiFi doesn’t work quite right. If I have no settings set for WiFi or any old connections set I can select my connection for the list. But, not if I have the connection saved to auto connect- it just keeps rotating, and rotating, and rotating, and rotating… You get my point. So, I deleted all my settings as I have to do before I shut down, and restarted.

Back on track, something new happened when I logged in. A picture of the globe appeared, then was overlay-ed with the HTML5 launcher. (I realized I had tried messing with backgrounds in the settings menu like in the older Jolicloud- Probably better to remove that user setting in a future update: when I can finally connect to the internet correctly.)

I noticed something had gone awry when the Jolicloud cloud logo at the top left starting getting the grey dots around it, like it was begin selected, when I hovered my mouse over it. I tried to go back to the settings and changed the background problem. I clicked. It bounced and stopped. I waited 2 minutes. I tried again. Then again. And a fourth.

I wasn’t getting pretty happy, so I tried to just go to the internet- I selected the WiFi manager in the task bar and connected to my WiFi network. Yay! It worked, again, only after I had removed the settings previously. So I clicked on Chromium. I repeated the same instant as with settings. I tried back with settings and Chromium. Back and for for the next 10 minutes. Finally, I really was’t happing. Slamming my palm on the table and shutting down, I slid the netbook to the other side of the table. I opened up my Chrome on my desktop and began this comment.

Please fix my netbook.

How frackin’ long is it supposed to take before you’re offered the 1.1 upgrade? I haven’t seen it yet. I am a recent adopter (I didn’t start using Jolicloud until I got my HP Mini 110 a few months ago), but c’mon!

Well, ultimately I got tired of waiting and just uninstalled the 1.0 version of Jolicloud Express, and installed the 1.1 version.

WiFi doesn’t work any more, which renders Jolicloud unusable (obviously), and I have no idea how to fix this. So it’s Windows 7 Starter on my HP Mini 110 until Jolicloud 1.2 comes out, I guess, at which point I’ll give it a whirl again. With any luck, both WiFi and sound will work in 1.2….

The reboot didn’t work and I was left at a terminal prompt giving me a message about my swap file; there wasn’t the ability to shut down (I alt-f2′d and logged on and tried that).
Turning on now I’m warned that there’s no ‘gnome’ and it comes up to a terminal prompt and there’s no graphical interface at all.

Not the best upgrade experience – started well, then died. I do hope I’m the only one this happened to, otherwise this has been a great OS for my needs.

From this point on I’m going to have to format/rebuild with a new 1.1 based iso or something. Since my netbook doesn’t have a cd drive this will probably mean some fiddly stuff. grr

I installed Jolicloud on my HP Mini 110 netbook with Windows 7 starter installed.

I like the concept and interface, but the program is that Jolicloud does not recognize my wireless. I connected by wire and the first screen immediately asked me to sign into Facebook ( I’m not sure why). Even though I tried to sign on to Facebook with my proper account, it didn’t work for some reason.

If I could have at least accessed the program (Jolocloud proper desktop), I may have been able to make it all work, but having to deal with a “Facebook wall’ completely frustrated me.

J’ai fait la mise à jour qui a pris une journée mais maintenant je n’ai plus accès à mon bureau si je ne suis pas connectée à internet.

I love Jolicloud 1.1. I bought 2 netbooks specifically for this OS. I love it!!! Windows 7 never even ran on these machines. As mine was a fresh install and not an upgrade, I have not had the issues the others mentioned. It just works. I am a linux veteran, so the install was familiar to me. I had to change the BIOS boot order to be able to install. Also, you can’t do a direct install (or at least I couldn’t), I had to run it virtually and then choose the install feature in order to get it to install. For the record, this is what the instructions state, but I hate running them on a live CD or USB because they run so slow. Once installed and running (you have to be connected to the internet to start the OS the first time) the Jcloud is ACES!! It is fast and intuitive. Great program guys, thanks. This is everything a netbook should be. I was excited about Chrome OS, but no longer. A cloud computer with the ability to install legacy software, what’s not to love?

I tried to update to the latest version of Jolicloud, but after it said “your system is synchronized,” I tried to reboot and am now receiving the message: start: Unknown job: S50network-manager. Can’t do anything from here. Any suggestions? This is the only OS I run on my tiny Acer laptop.

This link is helpful, http://help.jolicloud.com/home, but once I get to the grub menu, all I get is the network manager prompt. Can’t select a kernel.

System won’t allow me to type anything in the prompt. Please help.

Waited a few days thinking the updates might work after a while, but I think the updates may have been interrupted. I’m not sure, though.
