The Jolicloud vision was built around HTML5 way before it reached such a momentum, and it’s very exciting to be part of this growing movement.
The W3C has just unveiled an HTML5 logo to provide an identity for the Web platform. Jolicloud is a big supporter of this initiative, and we would like to take this opportunity to mention below some of the HTML5 technologies the Jolicloud desktop is using.

Offline & Storage. The Jolicloud desktop works perfectly offline thanks to a combination of two technologies: Application Cache, to store static assets, and Local Storage, to save some of your data locally such as apps and settings.
Connectivity. Jolicloud is using WebSockets to create asynchronous and bidirectional communication channels between the desktop and the Jolicloud APIs, especially to extend the browser capabilities and interact with the OS.
Styling. Many new CSS3 features are used on the Jolicloud application, especially animations and transitions for a rich user experience, but also the flexible box model, new selectors, gradients, shadows and so on.
Graphics. Canvas, in particular, is used in different parts of the desktop, not only to draw charts, for instance to visualize drive usage, but also to perform various image manipulations.
Semantics. The Jolicloud desktop is also using the new HTML5 markup elements and attributes to provide more meaning to the application structure.
We are experimenting with more HTML5 technologies at Jolicloud for the future evolutions of our desktop, such as multimedia integration, geolocation and Web Workers. We are continuously looking to push the limits of the browser and we look forward to sharing more updates with you very soon. Go HTML5!
