Latest apps on Jolicloud: Jaycut, Pen.io, Cartagr.am, WhatWasThere, FOCM…

by Jolicloud Team

March 4th, 2011

Check out some of the latest additions to our Jolicloud App Center.

Jaycut — A Web-based video editor

After YouTube launched its Video Editor, a neat app with basic editing features, now Jaycut is set to impress with a new version of its online software. Suitable for both beginners and professionals, the service is unintimidating and lets you do really cool stuff: capture video and audio directly from your webcam or microphone, create slow motion, use green screen technology, customize, draw, colorize, among other visual effects.

Pen.io — A simple publishing tool

One of the winners at this years’ LAUNCH conference, Pen.io allows you to quickly publish, share and edit a text page on the Web. All you need to do to create a page on Pen.io is choose a name for the page and include a password for editing. No need to create an account. You can change the title and body of the text really quickly and insert videos into the pages by placing a short code (:video) before the video URL. It is fast and simple, and the focus is on the content.

Cartagr.am — Instagram pics on a map

Cartagr.am is a new app that displays popular public photos from Instagram arranged by location on a world map. You can pan around, search by place name like New York (picture above) Paris or London, or zoom to your current location. Cartagr.am is one of the first applications developed by Bloom, who specialize in bite-size visualization apps. Check out Fizz, another one of Bloom’s ‘visual instruments’, also available in the App Center.

WhatWasThere — Put history in its place!

Ever wondered what your city looked like in the past? WhatWasThere is a great user generated app that lets people upload old photographs of places in the world. Visitors to the site can enter the name of a city, street or crossroad, or explore the map and zoom into locations of interest. Each photo comes with details, and you can switch to Street View to superimpose the photo to the current view of the location. Anyone can upload a photo and contribute to history.

FOCM — Which movie does the object come from?

Ji Lee, the smart creative behind The Bubble Project, Goollery and the Chrome Experiments site just launched Famous Objects in Classic Movies, or FOCM, a fun online game for movie lovers to guess which classic movie a particular object is from. There are over 70 movies to guess from and the site is open for people’s suggestions.

Know some great applications that are not yet in the App Center? Don’t hesitate to send us your suggestions at apps@jolicloud.com.

Happy Joliclouding!

How about LibreOffice? Or simply updating the old, outdated versions of current apps? I love what you’re trying to do, but the usefulness of these apps is…questionable.

Big fan of JoliCloud, as you may know from some of my previous blogposts… but many of the apps are now just glorified bookmarks. C’mon, we can find stuff on the web ourselves… your talent is better utilised on other things.

I love Jolicloud and I Love your app centre but it really needs a revamp, when you go to most recent(all apps) it shows loads of old apps like facebook, twitter etc, you need to sort that out and just have a most recent section, literally the most recent (today and the last month at most) otherwise keep up the great work

I was looking for a program to mount .iso file and was looking under the list of apps.

I didn’t see any though although I was able to find furius iso mount under the synaptic package manager.

In Jolicloud OS, you can browse an ISO with the file-system or use Brasero (available in the App Center).

Just a heads up here. The email address for suggesting apps – apps@jolicloud.com – is bouncing email back. Is there another email address I should use? Thanks!

If you have an old laptop with no MENU key, you cannot get to the local settings as there is no folder now. Can you guys screw up any more features? Is it even possible?
