Joli OS 1.2 Feature List

by Jolicloud Team

March 8th, 2011

Following up on our blog post yesterday, we’d like to share with you some of the features which will be available in the new Joli OS 1.2 later this week. Tomorrow, we’ll show you screenshots of the next version of the Jolicloud Desktop, our online product.

New Startup Experience

We’ve redesigned the boot and login screens.

New boot screen

New login screen (built with HTML5 technologies)

Guest Mode

We have introduced a Guest Mode to let your friends safely borrow your computer: they browse the Web in guest mode, and their files and settings are saved in a disposable file system that is swept away once they’re done. If they already have a Jolicloud account, they can automatically retrieve their Jolicloud personal desktop.

New Guest Mode to lend your Joli computer to your friends

New File Browser

In Joli OS 1.2, we have integrated the local file system inside the Jolicloud desktop. You can browse your local and external files (USB keys, SD cards, hard drives), preview documents and see how much disk space you have available.

File Browser

File Preview

Continuous Desktop Experience

All Joli OS users can access their personal desktop from any HTML5 capable browser. The goal is to offer a continuous desktop experience on multiple devices. If you own multiple computers running Joli OS they will be automatically synchronized.

If you’re using Chrome, we recommend you install the Jolicloud app from the Chrome Web Store.

Jolicloud Desktop on Joli OS, Chrome Windows and Chrome Mac

Auto-Login

One of the much requested features was the ability to automatically log into your session on start-up.

One-Click Auto-Login

Performance Improvements

We have improved the update management process. Your updates will now download automatically in the background and if you want, you can choose to delay them until you’ve finished your session.

Joli OS 1.2 users will also enjoy the latest Chromium 10 browser and the most recent update of Flash 10.2. The OS runs faster on older machines.

In addition, we’ve made lots of other optimizations to the OS, which will enhance your overall experience of Joli OS. In particular, you’ll notice that your Web apps now install and sync in a flash.

All users will be automatically upgraded to 1.2. As usual, our support team is here to help you if you need.

Stay tuned for more details about the upcoming new Jolicloud desktop.

Happy Joliclouding!

any official support for Intel GMA500 ?!

    Hello Luca,
we have already the best Support of GMA500 for Linux. For better support you need to shout to Intel.

Well… does that mean the sleep mode problems has now been fixed? From reading around, it looks like some other distro’s work better than Jolicloud does/did with 1.1?

GMA 500 has always been supported by Jolicloud OS since the Pre-Beta (Dec. 2009) but, there are known issues since the 1.1:
      1. Local video playback doesn’t work out-of-thebox BUT there’s a workaround http://help.jolicloud.com/entries/367263
      2. Flash video playback works ‘only’ when fullscreen mode is disabled
      Unfortunately the drivers are closed-source.
According to our tests, suspend and hibernate should work.
More details if you have trouble:

Sleep doesn’t work on my daughters 1101HA reliably, and never has been.

I created a ticket for this long time ago (#1911) but apparently the ticket system is also broken, as the ones I have created are left in “Awaiting assignment to a help desk operator” status (same goes for #1905).

I have also posted on getsatisfaction with more details (http://getsatisfaction.com/jolicloud/topics/resume_after_suspend_hangs_with_a_black_screen_on_asus_1101ha). Seems like I’m not the only one with this problem.

A manual “s2ram –force” will work, but the vt switching apparently sometimes goes wrong otherwise.

So on my daughters 1101HA it surely isn’t working reliably. It works sometimes, but not always.

I’d be more than happy to help or debug this, but I would need your help or input on this, so some kind of response or reaction would be appreciated…

      – Per.

Hi,

Will be there any power consumption improvement? Joli OS consumes battery almost twice as win7.

    Zak Kaufman
    March 8, 2011
    8:32 pm

Battery consumption should be nowhere near that fast. You may want to adjust your brightness settings. Also, if you have the option to set your machine to an ‘On Demand’ processor state, you should do that, as well!

    March 8, 2011
    8:43 pm

Depending on what version you are upgrading from and your device, yes, there is improved battery life. Under certain conditions if you left your machine idling in Jolicloud (with the screensaver active) battery life did suffer. This has been corrected in 1.2.

As Zak mentioned backlight brightness, other drains are wifi, bluetooth, and CPU speed. Jolicloud automatically selects ondemand mode when on battery power, but Windows 7 may be forcing it to “powersave”.

The difference being that “ondemand” does spin up the CPU temporarily if a processor-intensive task is requested, allowing for faster response times.

Will this version of Joli OS support the Asus T91MT multi-touch touchscreen? Also, will it support two-finger scroll on the T91mt? These are the only two features i’m missing!

    March 8, 2011

    Hello Andrew,

I have a T91MT and T101MT on my desk now and am still finalizing the multi-touch support. Unfortunately, this didn’t make it into the 1.2 release cut-off, but we will provide a knowledge base entry on how to add this in manually shortly after 1.2 is released.

I love Jolicloud, and have been waiting to use it on my Asus t91mt. It worked great on 1.0, but 1.1 did not work with the touchscreen. Please update the how-to asap! You guys rock. I love what you are trying to accomplish!

      Kast
      March 9, 2011
      3:24 pm

Hi! Got a 1000H and a T91MT too, and just was too deceived some days ago not having a patch yet for 1.1 to get the touchscreen back as it was in 1.0.

So I tried Maverick Netbook Edition on it, installed touchscreen and rotation button stuff as described here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1595220.

Works like charm. -> You can do it! :-D

Hoping we will see your patch soon in the help section (about touchscreen AND about rotation possibility!) as I do really prefer JoliOS to Maverick, for the use of those eeePC’s!

It would be even better if it’s included in JoliOS 1.2.1… ;-)

      Keep up that bright way.

I´m very happy with all that improvements, but I just gonna try the Joli OS again when you announce the support for SiS graphics. Joli looks terrible in 800×600 resolution. I think there are many desktops and laptops with this graphic chipset and you should work in a solution for us.

Congrats, see ya again when this graphic support arrives.

    Cesar
    March 8, 2011
    11:54 pm

    andré, I’m assuming you’re talking about SIS671/771 (SIS Mirage3).

Support for SIS Mirage3 graphics in Linux is, to be polite, an enourmous mess that nobody is caring to solve. There’s only a driver that works in specific situations (eg no 3D accel, video is choppy), with no known maintaner, that needs to be re-patched and recompiled every kernel change without any guarantee of success. Aside from Mandriva, that maintains this driver in its distro because of some OEM arrangements, nobody really supports the SIS Mirage3 driver. And this chip was used in bargain/cheap notebooks, mostly in emerging markets, so there’s even less interested in providing a decent support (I bet there’s more RIVA TNT users out there than Mirage3)

What you can do, if you REALLY want to use Joli OS and REALLY want to help Jolicloud and the community at large, is searching the internet for recipes to make SIS Mirage3 working on Ubuntu and try to make it to Joli OS.

      andré
      March 9, 2011
      12:20 am

Cesar, I use this modified driver in Ubuntu 10.10.. it makes Ubuntu usable, I use the Unity 2D as interface and it works well. I say it about the SISxxx/xxx support (Mirage3) because of Joli’s philosophy of make every trash that we call desktop/laptop an awesome computer, and hopefully we would have an attention, but as I see we gonna meet again when I buy a new computer, and then I’ll help you all with a clear feedback for sure.
Congrats Cesar, keep on the good work (:

hi all. i installed joli os 2.1 (keep windows) today on my fujitsu siemens scenic n320 desktop celeron 2.6, 1gb ram, 40gb samsung sata, and the holy crap SIS 661 + with only 32 mb memory. i usually have always win xp in dual boot with ubuntu. now this os is an amazing “experience” (in Jobs terms:) compared to xp and ubuntu. i still dont understand where is joli runing, on my hdd or in my ram?? its fast. really fast. but i cant make it to get a higher resolution. i think i am lower than 1024×768 :((. in ubuntu i had the same problem, and i fix this by adding a xorg.conf file. in joli 2.1 the xorg.conf file exist in the right place but joli keeps using vesa i think… is there any thing i can do.. or a workaround??
except the low resolution, this is a joli OS, tres joli :) keep it up this way guys. thanks

I like Joli OS. I dig its functionality and the aesthetic aspect of the system.

But there are glitches: Like, first, for some reason, I had to downgrade Flash on JoliOS, but on Win7, everything was cool on the newer version.

Also, when I boot up my Asus 1005-HAB netbook at school, the loading screen may hang up and not log me into my netbook at all, and it frustrates me. (Does it matter that the network requires a browser log-in?!)

If these get fixed, I’m cool with eliminating Windows 7 forever.

    Zak Kaufman

Joli OS 1.2 will include Chromium 10 and Flash 10.2, which should improve stability all around. And luckily, Joli OS now uses an HTML5 login screen which should eliminate any lock ups!

The stream is used to provide information about friends that you have added using the OS. Friends can easily view what apps are being installed or removed via their stream, and can also share apps! It makes the OS experience very social.

      7:52 pm

I have to agree that just allowing you to have Joli friends here is ridiculous. I doubt there are more than a dozen people using Joli in the whole state of NC. At the very least, I would think it should support Twitter, Facebook, and Google Buzz (maybe MySpace).

Otherwise, just a generic screen that updated on all users favorite apps, shares, etc. would be more useful. I like Joli OS, but stopped using it at 1.0 when suspend/resume broke on my Aspire One Netbook. I will likely try 1.2 to see if that issue is fixed, otherwise I’ll have to keep waiting to use Joli again

      Thank you.

Hi I have been a jolicloud user since the early pre-alpha stages but I may leave it soon unless jolicloud 2.2 brings back firefox and opera to your app directory? (I am an advanced user so I am more than capable of installing it through other methods however I dislike it mostly because of the principal. It’s worse situation than windows or Mac here and is a very anti-linux feeling. No other os is this limiting in terms of browser choice and so while its fine if u want to use chromium as the default because u feel it’s lightweight for low power devices but don’t drop support for others!

Is JoliOS 1.2 compatible with the new amd c-50 processors? And is 1gb of ddr3 ram enough or will upgrading it to 2gb give better Joli experience? I want to be sure that what I’ll buy can run the joli goodness! Thank you.

Hi,
I would like to ask how it’s compatibility with Asus K72Jr? I use Ubuntu and I can not suspend correctly (Suspend to RAM) or hibernate.
I am one of the first testers (I have label Founding Member) and I would like to use Jolicloud if there worked on suspend to RAM or hibernate.
I apologize for my “Google “in English.

Thank you all for your answers.

Juan Gomez March 12, 2011 This guy oisuobvly has problems interacting with other people or has problems reading people.Human interaction during dating is a complicated “dance” where you observe and interpret cues and react accordingly. In our normal and polite society, the cues will have to be overwhelming positive in order to strip and throw oneself naked on to the bed.IMHO, such cues from the female would have to consist of exceedingly lascivious behavior including but not limited to:1) A lot of winking and nodding2) Licking or smacking of lips3) Hands down my pants or other parts of my body4) Removing all or parts of her garments5) Saying “Get on my bed naked”6) A gun and “This is a robbery”Also, IMHO the above behavior is not considered normal in North American females on the first date outside of movies, escort services (so I’ve heard), drunken frat parties, fantasies, or extreme inebriation. Therefore IHMO, Kate, you have now entered the dating Twilight Zone.

I used Joli OS 1.0 and 1.1 on my EeePC 1000HE.

1. Wifi could never connect or work properly after waking from sleep. Always had to restart.

2. There were bugs in screen brightness not being consistent after plugging/unplugging the power adapter.

3. Lacked monitor color correction software.

In order from most to least imporant, are any of these fixed in 1.2? It was these that kinda killed the OS for me.

And a suggestion. The launcher only shows webapps and native apps that are synced from the “app store.” And now that we can add webapps to the launcher on our own, how about being able to add our own native apps that aren’t from the app store?

1.5. “Open with” never worked. I wanted my movies to open with VLC, but no matter what settings I changed, they would always start with the built in media player.

This got on my nerves a lot.

Just a tiny, two-cent suggestion, but I think that although the new icon hover box looks nifty, the grey bar on top looks dinky. I think it would look sleeker if the [X], [Star], and [i] were transparent just like the rest of the box.

      March 14, 2011
      11:02 am

My issue was incomplete update because of low disk space :(
I booted holding “Shift” on boot time and choosed the old kernel. Next I had to move some data to the bigger SSD. When I had enough space I did a Jolicloud restore (Ctrl+Shift+F10). Now it works fine :)

I’m with other users, Really like the jolicloud or joliOS whatever it is called, but this update completely broke my system.

Netbook is now stuck in boot screen indefinitely, although it worked fine before the update. IF the updates are going to keep breaking the netbook and I have to spend so much time to hunt down the issue and fix, I think its back to Ubuntu again :(

Too bad, I like the joli interface better than Ubuntu, but bottom line is that if it doesn’t work, well its no matter how nice the interface is.

I love Jolicloud. Ran Jolicloud 1.1 on an IBM Thinkpad T40 which played video and DVD great. Not since the 1.2 update! Video playback is only smooth at half size. No more full screen video-file playback without stuttering. And the DVD playback is worse, you can see the frames sweep across the screen. What did you do?

Hi: on my EEE PC 4G, upgrading from 1.1 to 1.2, causes — upon install and restart — a crash reporting a Kernel Panic. Unfortunately, the three times today I’ve reinstalled 1.1 today are followed by Jolicloud deciding I MUST sync apps and install 161 upgrades. And then back to the kernel panic.

Is there ANY way to tell this thing, NO, don’t upgrade?

Wrong. While the Facebook icon is rather (overly) prominent when you first log on, you may sign up to Jolicloud’s own server instead, as many do who just don’t want to give Facebook as much benefit of doubt on their privacy to use it for storage of potentially sensitive configuration data (that one might wish to keep out of the reach of any leech).

Here’s where I saw the “writing on the wall:” Between me writing to her and her writing me back, there were times where she did NOT write, but was “online now.” She shouldn’t put all of her eggs into one basket of course, but that was very telling, and when she broke it off, it wasn’t shocking to me.Also, in a way, if I send a woman a wink or e-mail and she does the “iggy” as I prefer, I kind of wish she would “block me from viewing her profile,” because I send so many, I know that one of these days, I’m going to wink or e-mail a woman TWICE, and that’s going to freak her out.

Yes jolicloud works on the Archos 9. I got ubuntu working with Intel EMGD drivers too. But jolicloud Poulsbo drivers benchmark better and its a more responsive feeling os.

Make sure the “GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT” line looks something like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash i8042.nomux=1″
need the i8042.nomux=1.

Update grub….
sudo update-grub

change /etc/rc.local
Arrow down to just before the “exit 0″ line and add the following line:

echo -n “serio_raw” > /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio1/drvctl

then install eGalaxTouch. Select PS/2 by pressing 2 when asked.

Calibrate etc..
Goodluck and enjolicloud.

Got info from:

Installed Joli OS, yesterday, on a Dell XPS M1330 Laptop. This is a relatively high end laptop with Win7, NVidia graphics and a LED screen. The install worked without a hitch and took about 20 minutes.. The NVidia graphics were tested and configured twice automatically during the install and the display result is vivid, sharp, and beautiful.

The install asked for the wifi password and the connection came up immediatley. I think the connection is not “n” however. But the screen displays are still very fast. I have 3 Win7 PC’s and two of these caused significant problems during install. For Joli to bring this laptop up without a hitch on a Win 7 laptop is quite an accomplishment. Impressive work Joli Team.

I haven’t had much time on Joli, but the screen layout seems a bit strange and inefficient. A bit too structured for me. This impression may change with time.

It’s good. simple and fast.A realtime saver. On my netbook , a 706MB installation file took almost 60gb of my netbook’s harddrive that was running on Windows 7. Does it really need that big space?

Well it’s been a week, at first i really liked this os, but it took a minute to get over its uselessness when not connected to ear splitting fast internet. All and all the lack of legitimate apps in the app store really disappointed me, i mean, its a computer run a program. Flash doesn’t deem to work right in chrome and their are no updates to fix it lastly when i downloaded firefox from the app store it was yet another link to a website! All the “app” does it download a bz2 of firefox! after getting that running i cannot add a real icon… you know for a program… to my desktop! sorry i done mean to rant i just think someone who matters might actually get to read this! last critique is…. well the same one i have for ubuntu 11 their is no customization to the default environment. all i want to do is change the size of my shortcuts, i mean “apps” they are so big! i could fit 3 times as many in the same space.

on a positive note. the operating system interface is really cool! i like the search function on the desktop. and i like the default shortcuts, sorry i mean “apps”

Quick Launch shortcuts of applications can be installed on the very top line of the desktop. And what exactly is a huge shortcut :-)

google docs works with nube?

I like they way they have improved the performance better than windows but I have one issue. You see with the windows, when you open a document for example if its an essay or some notes, it works automatically with word document to open. I have installed Google docs but it does open it. Is there a way of linking with word documents?

Joli 1.2 is great…As I have multiple computers the whole point is browser access to the desktop of all my stuff…great….also great to access from work….HOWEVER…it still needs some work! Ability to link ANY online storage….not just Dropbox…eg Skydrive…A drive…all those bigger than 2gb offerings put there……also putting local apps JUST under a folder sucks……these should be able to be put on the dashboard. Finally drag and drop functionality is extremely limited…eg drag and drop to dashboard from local apps……and no ability to sort the dashboard screens!!

These are intended to be constructive comments….get these sorted and it will be ‘perfic’!

I have noticed that on distrowatch the kernel version for Joli OS 1.2 is 2.6.35.10. However this is incompatible with my Acer Aspire One netbook due to the ASPM issue, has this been fixed yet?

(I tried asking on getsatisfaction 4 months ago but no-one answered, I’m now trying to ask anywhere I can!)

Colt0410 on July 22, 2011 Personally, I think this class is aoewsme. I dance with a Tahitian group, and go to Hot Hula classes here in Hawai’i, and I still sweat a lot. Furthermore, there are a lot of Polynesians in my class, being that I live in Laie, and a lot of us are overweight. Some of the best Tahitian, hula, etc. dancers are overweight, but I think the aim of this class is to lose weight.

Its like you learn my mind! You appear to grasp a lot about this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I think that you simply could do with a few percent to drive the message house a little bit, but instead of that, that is excellent blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.

Could we add support for online file storage like: Box.net, Amaazon Drive, Windows Live Drive and even Google Drive? Currently only Dropbox is supportted.
