It’s been a while since you’ve had an update from us but we’ve been working hard on something big. We will tell you a bit about that very soon! In the meantime, we have some updates for you on Joli OS.

Joli OS Updates

We’re happy to announce that Firefox is back in the App Center and it’s Firefox 5! Remember like all the apps in the Jolicloud App Center, it will be automatically synchronized on all your devices.

Some other native apps have also been upgraded including:

  • Adobe AIR 2.6.0
  • Banshee 2.0.1
  • Dropbox Client 0.6.8
  • Gimp 2.6.8
  • Hulu Desktop 0.9.8
  • Skype 2.2.0.35
  • Thunderbird 3.1.10
  • Transmission 2.31
  • ZumoDrive 0.989

You’ll get a notification on your desktop or you can just go to the settings tab to see if you have updates available. Also, on the browser front we will have an upgrade to Chromium 13 for you by the end of the month.

In addition to the native apps listed above, many new Web apps have been added to the App Center. Some of these include 500px, Podio, Google+, Angry Birds, Google Music, Amazon Cloud Player or Pica Pic. Don’t forget you can add your own Web apps from the App Center and share them with your friends by clicking on the star icon.

Just wanted to leave this little tip. If you’re using Spotify with WINE on Joli OS in the US, DON’T connect your account to Facebook yet. Something about the built-in browser seems to cause a crash everytime, but removing Facebook’s authorization to use Spotify seemed to fix it. Working fine now.

    I’m using the native Spotify app. I initially had problems with it not playing. No errors or crashes or anything. Just push the play button & nothing happened. Evidently a restart fixed the problem. Only thing that bugs me so far is the grey icon background color on the task tray. Evidently the transparency bug still isn’t fixed.

      Just wanted to give a comment on the Spotify issues. The grey background issue is due to Wine, but Tom McClain was talking about the native Spotify app, I believe he was referring to the Spotify Linux (Preview) version. Its a native Linux client and is free to download, but can only be use by Premium and Ultimate account users. Its still under heavy development.

      Just wanted to let give my. Can’t wait for this big something this fall :)

      p.s. will there be an update to the window manager? I’m not sure if you use Byoku or Metacity, but I’d really like to see the option for a little more eye candy for those with more powerful systems. Oh and have the native Dropbox client be installed by default and be integrated into the system. So when you go into the “files” tab of the Joli menu and go to dropbox, it will actually be the actual local files, instead of showing links from the dropbox site.

      anyways just some 2 cents, plus some pocket change :-P

You all should update with news a little more often. Even if what is being mentioned is relatively minor. Long periods of time without an update gives the impression that the project has become stagnant.

Lack of blog updates aside, Joli’s still keeping things updated and is my “daily driver” OS for personal use. Would love, however, to know what’s getting updated though. Maybe blog posts for that?

i try jolicloud one year ago and it was very good but dont support resolution highter than 800×600 and it’s not good if you want to make rebirth and old computer. this problem has been solved?
is avaible an italian version of JC?
can i use yahoo messenger with webcam in Jolicloud?
can i use Essential Pim? sorry if i do this answer in wrong place but i dont understand where i can do it. thanks a lot, very good job!

    It’ll depend on the graphics card in your machine, but yes, support for significantly more hardware has been added. So you should try it out!

      Basnhee won’t completely substitute iTunes I suppose. I had an iPod and I don’t have iTunes installed – because I don’t use Windows or Mac – and it wouldn’t work for adding music to my iPod so then I sold it to a friend :(

WARNING TO JOLIOS USERS:

According to the JoliOS/Jolicloud EULA, basically any content you create on JoliOS/Jolicloud will be licensable (i.e. they can sell your content and rights to its use) at their discretion. Until this is changed, I would advise against the use of this product. Below is the relevant section from the terms of use:

“You retain your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or through the Jolicloud Services. By uploading, submitting, posting or displaying Content on or through the Jolicloud Services, you grant Jolicloud a worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute such Content in any and all media or distribution methods (now known or later developed).
Jolicloud reserves the right (but shall have no obligation) to decide whether any Content that You use complies with these ToS and any additional terms.

      With due respect Cedric, what does “through the Cloud Services” mean? The following line clearly states Jolicloud reserves the right to “decide” what constitutes “Content” through these services.

      I have seen you post similar replies elsewhere, but this is not a legal opinion, it’s a vague response. If you consult your legal counsel they will clearly tell you that the implications of the Jolicloud Terms of Service can be interpreted to give Jolicloud rights over any content it “decides” has been transmitted “through the service” as you say.

    Please read carefully the terms of service here: http://www.jolicloud.com/tos

    Here is the definition of Jolicloud Services: “The Jolicloud Services are provided via the Jolicloud Desktop. The Jolicloud Desktop is accessible directly via http://my.jolicloud.com/. It is also available as a downloadable application. To begin using the Jolicloud Services you must create an account.”

    So the part you extracted is about the desktop app not the OS. Like Cedric said our TOS never say that we can or will read and own your data that are on (or goes through) Joli OS. This is just related to what you produce through Jolicloud Desktop. It allows us to share (if you will) an app you created. Or show your recommendation (if you’ve asked for) to other Jolicloud users. That’s all.

This left me concerned that Joli OS would be abandoned in favor of iOS/Android/HTML5-only applications. While some of your users no longer have netbooks please don’t forget to follow those of us who still do. I have tried almost every linux distro possible on my netbook and none offer the same usability and functionality as Joli OS.

Hi. I installed Jolicloud on an EEEPC 701SD. I used a USB key with the ISO I downloaded along with the USB creator. The OS boots only if the USB stick is inserted. Then it boots up into the OS and uses the data on the hard drive, and it works well. If I do not have the USB inserted all I get is a blinking cursor after the bios screen. I installed it on the SSD 3 times already with same results. Any ideas?

    Sounds like the boot sequence in the BIOS is loading the original OS from the hard drive instead of the stick. Change the boot order to boot from the stick first. That’s what worked for me.

I love Joli OS.

It seems to me though the built in Google Docs integration is pretty much useless. To upload anything you have to access the Google Docs app anyways.

Ex – I open a word document from the built in google docs. Use open office to edit it for a few hours, save it. Now what? I need to open the google docs app to reupload it.

There needs to be some added functionality to open and upload documents stored locally into google doc’s using the built in feature.

……..Unless i’m just completely missing something here.

Oh and to add to the above.

I know if you use documents in the google docs format then using the built in google docs function would work just fine. But for those of us who use computers at work, school, etc, the reality is that these 99.999% of the time are going to have MS Word installed on them. When you upload to google docs, it doesn’t auto-format to the google docs format. Going back and forth between the two between work and home and home and school would be a formatting nightmare. For those who use Google Docs as a cloud backup … thats what i’m referencing the ^above^ post about.

    Also, you might check out Microsoft’s SkyDrive and their online web app versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote, and PowerPoint. It doesn’t have Jolicloud integration, but it is a handy tool if you get tired of reuploading files all of the time. Also, SkyDrive comes with 25 free gigs of storage so you can access your files anywhere just like Google Docs.

Please put synaptic in version 1.3 or make a full version of joli like a dvd version with all good apps for linux like xbmc rhytmbox inkspace and many others hard to install in joli 1.2 cause of dependencies need manual download and instalation. RPM and Deb installer and all done u can call it joli os 2.0 full live dvd.
thx joli os is a good os very criative plataform and im happy in have it in my nettop. I can compare Joli 2.0 synaptic with android or win 8 cause user friendly so i really believe in Joli.

Ditch iTunes, gtkpod works perfectly with an iPod. Get it via the Terminal: sudo apt-get install gtkpod. You’ll find it afterwards in the More Apps list in JC 1.2.
1.2 works great, except the multimonitor support. That’s bad, really REALLY bad. If I turn the netbook’s screen off, the main display works fine; if I turn both of them on, the menu bar jumps around and the mouse doesn’t work on both anyway. If I plug out the 22″ screen while being the only active, my laptop’s screen stays blank, so I have to reset the whole thing… I’d LOVE to have an actual multimonitor capability O_O.
But for now, it’s the fastest OS out there. Even zippier than Ubuntu itself.

I use CCleaner from Piriform on my WinPCs … is there a similar program for JOLI?
(Thought it was a joke when you said “recycle” your old laptop. My OMNIBOOK 4400 (2GB RAM, 100GB HD) runs almost as fast as my desktop PC now.) Thanks

    I recommend installing JoliOs on an extra Partition. It runs more efficient. Besides, you can than install it on an encrypted partition for more security (since most netbooks are meant to be carried around and may get lost).
    Check out this instruction for installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix on an encrypted partition. It works as well with JoliOs.

Pressing control-w closes the jolicloud window, there should be a restraint on this behavior, or a way to reopen the page without using the restore utility or having to re-login

    Sarah August 27, 2011 Where did you stay in Costa Rica? It looks btieuaful. Andrew and I did an all-inclusive for our honeymoon too and it was great. We stayed at Couples in Negril, Jamaica. We loved Jamaican food! Callaloo and jamaican patties and jerk chicken and curried goat and ackee and breadfruit it was all wonderful. We had lobster a couple of times at the resort, but the best lobster we had was when we wandered away down the beach and found these crazy old Jamaican fisherman cooking over a fire on the beach. They served lobster (caught just before cooking) with fresh lime and scotch bonnet peppers. It was amazing. They called it the Office of Nature and I don’t know why, but it worked!

    Yes, it does. Installed JoliOs 1.2 on my Nokia Booklet with a 64GB SSD from Kingston. Runs very smooth and of course faster than on HDD. The SSD is even recognized in the hardware manager as a solid state drive. So i guess the OS sets the required parameters automatically (e.g. turn off defragmentation, use TRIM etc)

      The sata-pata bridge in the booklet’s chipset doesn’t pass TRIM commands through from the OS to the SSD. Something to watch out for if future releases of Jolicloud offer TRIM support: A TRIM enabled SSD will report it’s capability to the OS, and the system will choke with disk errors. If you run the OS your Booklet was originally installed with, make sure you disable TRIM in the OS using the original HDD before trying it on your SSD.

Yes, you can use JoliOS with an SSD. I`ve installed JoliOS on my Asus X101 (with SSD). Everything works pretty fine and smooth.

hello, i have just installed 1.2, is this the new version?
its really buggy and wont let the apps full screen minimize or close, its not telling me log off unless i hold in the power button, help. good OS but needs fixing :)

Hey! I really enhoy joli Os…but i’m using the live session from the CD. I want to install it into my USB Stick, but i don’t know if JoliOS supports booting from a stick. Also, when i’m installing into HDD sometimes at 5% or 25% or 27% the installer freeze….and nothing happen…i can’t mouve the cursor either. HELP!

    I went to the ubuntu website and found a link to a freeware program that runs under windows, and installs a .iso file to a USB stick, which you can boot from. Just follow the download / install directions. I put jolicloud on a 1gb stick, and installed it on an old netbook after booting from the USB stick. To boot you may have to change boot order in the bios.

Joli OS users: We’ve pushed some updates, among which are the latest stable versions of Chromium 14 and Flash 11!
Firefox 7 is also available in the App Center! If you have already installed Firefox 5 or 6, the update should be available through the regular process.

Make sure to also check out the newest additions to the App Center!

I dropped Win 7 for JoliCloud. That says a lot! I love the concept and I am jumping on the bandwagon because I’ve heard the team has some smart people behind it so I am hoping for bigger and better things! Thumbs up to the team.

The only things that could be in my opinion room for improvement is that, this OS is Ubuntu based but yet you feel like you do not have control of your system i.e. (settings are too basic) It would be neat to have kind of like under the hood settings and apps to do things that you can in Ubuntu. To mount/unmount a drive/ to explore the contents of a new drive that you plug in (external or internal drive) things like that. I do understand that the direction Jolicloud is heading is trying to do everything on the sky but still, I would love to still put to good use my machine and burn some RAM. :-)

Other than that I’m sticking with Joli… let’s see what happens!

I’ve been trying to get help printing from within Jolicloud to the printer attached to my network and I can’t get any help. I logged onto the Jolicloud help site and submitted a question 3 weeks ago without a response. I’m trying out your OS and think there are some great things about it but that kind of customer service is unacceptable! Someone please help! I open the Printer Add-on app, then add printer, the when I click on Find Network Printer – it asks for a Host. What do I put there?

Also, does anyone know I can access an external hard drive attached to a Windows 7 computer on my network?

So I had been thinking about giving Joli OS a whirl for a few days after trying out Ubuntu and deciding I did not like it.

Joli OS installed just fine, no problems. But after I login, it tells me to connect. I go to the upper right corner, look through the tabs ‘n such and can’t figure out what I’m supposed to do.

My network adapter is a Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n WiFi adapter. I’ve never had to look to see what wireless card I have, so I can only assume that’s it. My main OS is Windows 7. I was able to connect without any issues when using Ubuntu as well. Our modem is a AirPort Extreme from Apple.

Help? =( I’m not the brightest when it comes to issues like this; still learning.

I’m impressed! I have been struggling to get the poulsbo drivers and vnc working on my Nokia booklet 3G using Ubuntu. Jolicloud installed like a dream and everything ‘just works’(tm)

The apps look great, how about a wordpress interface for us serious bloggers?

Keep up the good work and I’ll see what I can do to help.
