Announcing the new Jolicloud. Your cloud, beautifully organized.

by Jolicloud Team

October 27th, 2011

Dear Joliclouders,

This summer we announced that we were working on a new product and more than 35 000 people registered for the beta without knowing the details. We’ve been amazed and humbled by such a response. Today we want to offer more details about what we have been working on over the last months: the new Jolicloud platform.

With the first Jolicloud platform, we wanted to give anyone access to the cloud. We created a very simple OS and the first Web app store with access to the coolest applications online. 600 000 users and more than 15 million apps installed later, we decided to reinvent Jolicloud to give you the possibility to access your entire personal cloud.

4 months ago, we started building an entire new platform that makes it easy to access from one place, all the things you care about, we call it the personal cloud.

With Jolicloud, you will be able to access your personal cloud from your iPhone, your Android phone, your tablet, your computer and pretty much any connected device with our API. Joli OS, our own operating system used in many schools and public service as a free way to recycle old computers to connect them to the cloud, has been open sourced and is now available to the community. All our existing OS users will benefit from our new platform.

Be the first to try our exciting new product, register for the private beta at beta.jolicloud.com, we will start rolling out invites soon!

So please tell us when you’ll release the next version of JoliOS.
Version 1.0 was released in July 2010, Version 1.1 was released on 7 December 2010 and Version 1.2 was released on 9 March 2011. So it’s time for Version 1.3!

Yep, I feel like you too. I’ve been using JoliOS since beta 0.9 version and when it was making my cursor dance all around the screen when I was using the touchpad. I’ve seen the improvement from when it was slow and based on Firefox to when it was blazing fast thanks to Chromium. I’ve seen some good improvements (GUI, 1-click apps) and worse ones (bye bye synaptic) from my user’s point of view.

But this one… I’m just doubtful. When I logged into the beta portal, I had the choice to “add” things I am not using. I know that I am an exception out there and that everyone else is using Facebook (or at least, 800 million people), so this is probably for the best. But until now, apps were always optional. I have to admit that I don’t know how it will be, but I hope I won’t have to see “lolcats” and other parasites everywhere on my computer.

And as you said, JoliOS is mainly used to bring back old computers to life and is widely used in schools. Not really the place where teachers want to see pupils on Facebook, right?

      Well, I’ll wait and see…

Synaptic is still there but you have to enter a new short-cut using the [Add] option in the [System][Preferences][Main Menu].

      Type: Application
      Name: Synaptic
      Command: gksu –description /usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop /usr/sbin/synaptic
      Comment: Program Downloader

Then you can add Ubuntu progs like Arista Transcoder for changing movies for your mobiles and Asunder CD ripper/Kd3-qt for music. Also codecs.

C’est un excellent travail. JC 1.2 est véritablement adapté pour mes grands-parents. La future version bouleversera-t-elle l’apparence ? Il serait dommage que le switch soit douloureux pour eux. (branche 3.0 sur kernel ?)

Your desktop OS has a lot of pointless social features many of us don’t care about. I also could careless about being in some cloud. I store my shit on a flash drive where I can use it on any computer or any device with a usb port. The cloud is pointless.

    Spooky Donkey
    October 29, 2011
    10:54 pm

pointless to you maybe, for me it’s useful. it’s convenient having access to information i’ve worked on on school computers at home or on the road (even on devices lacking a usb port), and just plain cool to have access to most of my music, photo, and art collection pretty much wherever i go (which wouldn’t come close to fitting on any usb stick i own), not to mention all the useful apps i could use.

      jason
      October 30, 2011
      6:46 pm

My main riff is with the social features (so and so installed this app and that app), and always having to be “online” to access my stuff on Joli OS. Joli OS isn’t useable offline.

    Holly
    October 31, 2011
    2:28 am

I am using Joli OS 1.2 and am able to access my stuff whilst offline. I just click on the folder icon on the top left of the desktop and can click into any of my folders there. Also if you go into ‘Local Apps’ from the dashboard, then ‘More Apps’ and open File Browser you’ll find your folders.

I agree with Spooky Donkey. Joli OS gives my data and my work an ever-present feeling. I am able to access all my information from any computer and Dropbox/Google Docs is a lifesaver. There’s almost no other OS that can do that.

Posted on The dganer to America is not Barack Hussein Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Hussein Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.

    Hello Gus.

    You mean that ? http://bit.ly/vErN8V
Remember JoliOS is an Ubuntu-based OS, well you can download every apps able to run with it.
    1) Go to “Local settings” and find “Synaptic package manager”
    2) Search “Mixx” in the search bar and tick the package
    3) Apply, you’ll be able to use Mixx in “Local apps”, then “More apps” folders (you can add a shorcut with Add a local app)
    4) Enjoy ! (;

As a longtime user of Jolicloud (since the very early alpha days) and still a user on my netbooks I can see the potential of a cloud based system which is able to be used by multiple devices.
I am an Android firmware developer for tablets and so will be testing as well on these devices.

Looking forward to some more test :)

Jolicloud is by far the easiest, fastest Distro out right now. The way it connects to various apps and services has put my faith in FOSS back on solid ground. Now Joli devs. I am amazed by your hard work, I am now 100% converted from Windows (I used to be a fanboi btw) but this is the most amazing thing rolling right now. Now if we could pressure netflix to make a Nix client!

To be honest, the thing I’d really, REALLY want to see show up in the next version of Joli OS is LibreOffice. I know that you guys are kind of locked into 10.04 since it’s LTS, but I’ve made my argument in the GetSatisfaction site and will restate it here as plainly as possible: LO has succeeded OOo. It’s faster and lighter. Besides, netbooks (the original and primary target of Joli OS) do 2 things well: browse the web, and EDIT DOCUMENTS.

You guys have done an incredible job fulfilling the former half of the netbook equation, no doubt about that. I’m just looking forward to the day you deliver LibreOffice in the Software Center, and I don’t need to waste a needless click to launch LO from the “desktop”, or Alt+F2 my way to the program. Hope you guys care about your users’ need for the best office software as I do.

HI

I love Joli OS. You guys did great job here. however i still have some problems.
1)Sounds are distorted and have noise in when played from music player in OS/Youtube
2)No Extensions on Chrome- Consider adblock atleast.
3)Option to access Windows folder like desktop/documents.
4) Outdated chrome browser.

If you could fix these it will be best OS i ever had. Especially the sound issues and noise.
